Heard someone at the coffee shop say self checkout is killing jobs, but I saw the opposite at our local grocery store
The guy behind me was ranting about how self checkout kiosks are taking away cashier jobs, and I just stood there thinking about my visit to Publix last Tuesday. They had 6 self checkouts and 4 regular lanes open, plus two employees just standing around helping people with the machines. So are these machines actually replacing jobs, or are they just changing what the jobs look like? I'm leaning toward the second but I'd like to hear from folks who work retail or have seen it play out in their town.
