Spent $80 on a cheap rain barrel and it cracked within 3 months

I bought one of those basic plastic rain barrels from a big box store back in April. Thought I was being smart about water conservation. The thing split right down the seam after a few hot days. Ended up replacing it with a heavy-duty metal one for $150 from a local garden supply place. The metal one's been holding up fine through the summer. Anyone else had cheap plastic rain barrels fail on them?

I finally figured out why my book club hated that historical fiction pick

Last month our group read "The Night Watchman" and three people quit halfway through. At first I thought it was just slow pacing but then I sat down and actually counted the chapters from different perspectives. There were 7 viewpoints bouncing around and none of them connected until page 250. We spent the whole meeting arguing about whether the author should have cut two characters entirely. Has anyone else run into a book that needed a stricter editor?

Learned the hard way that coliving spaces aren't all Instagram-ready

Three months ago I booked a coliving spot in Medellin that looked amazing on their website. Showed up and the wifi was so spotty I couldn't join a single client call for two days straight (which is bad when you freelance). Had to scramble and move to a hostel in El Poblado that actually had fiber optic. Anybody else have a coliving experience that didn't match the photos?

Chat with a bartender in Austin changed how I watch crime docs

I was grabbing a beer last Friday and this guy next to me starts talking about Forensics Files. He said he worked as a crime scene photographer for 12 years. Told me most TV shows get the timeline totally wrong. Real evidence takes weeks not 45 minutes with commercial breaks. Been binging Cold Case Files since that convo and I notice the gaps now. The real cases move so much slower. Has anyone else had a pro ruin a show for them with real world details?

Why is everyone overcrowding their air fryer basket like it's a full size oven?

Tbh I learned the hard way after 3 batches of soggy fries that leaving at least an inch of space around each piece makes everything crisp way better than cramming it all in, has anyone else noticed the difference when you actually half the portion size?

Caught a guy at the comic shop gatekeeping classic Ghibli films

I was at my local shop downtown looking through the Blu-ray section and heard this dude telling a new fan that if they hadn't seen the subbed version of Princess Mononoke they shouldn't even call themselves an anime fan. Like come on, let people enjoy things however they want. I get that subtitles matter to some folks but I grew up watching the dubbed versions with my cousins on Saturday mornings and they still hit me right in the feels every time. It's just weird to me that people put up these imaginary barriers to being a 'real fan' when we all started somewhere. Made me wonder how many people get pushed away from the hobby because of stuff like that. Has anyone else run into this kind of elitist attitude at your local shops and how do you deal with it without starting an argument?

Just realized I’ve been holding my kitchen knife wrong for literally 10 years

Was chopping onions last night and my roommate pointed out my grip, said I’m pinching the blade instead of the handle. Now my hand doesn’t ache after 5 minutes, has anyone else had that lightbulb moment with a basic tool?

My neighbor called my stucco patch job 'lumpy' and I was mad at first, but now I think he was right

I patched a hole in my stucco wall last spring and thought it looked fine from a few feet away. Then my neighbor Bob, who's been doing construction for 30 years, walked over and said it looked lumpy and wouldn't hold up to the monsoon rains. I got defensive at first because I spent a whole Saturday on it. But after the first big storm in July, I saw a crack form right along the edge of my patch. Bob showed me how I didn't mix the stucco ratio right and I used too much water. Now I'm debating whether to rip out the whole patch and start fresh or try to layer more on top. Has anyone else had a neighbor give them feedback that totally changed how they approach a home repair?

My friend made me watch 'The Room' and I thought he was joking

He said it was the best worst movie ever, but I was sure it was just a regular bad movie. We sat down, and within five minutes I saw Tommy Wiseau throw a football like a weird doll and say 'Oh hi Mark' for no reason. The plot made zero sense, with random flower shop scenes and people laughing at serious moments. I spent the whole time laughing so hard I cried, and now I get why people love it. What's another movie that's so bad it becomes a full party experience?

Drove past a yard with those electric leaf blowers 3 times this week

My neighbor Dave let me borrow his Ego blower last fall and I was totally ready to hate on it because I've been a gas guy for like 15 years. But I used it on my driveway and it moved wet leaves way better than my old Stihl ever did, no joke. The battery did last about 45 minutes on full power which was enough for my whole yard honestly. I still think gas tools have their place for heavy stuff like clearing gravel but for everyday blowing I'm starting to come around. The only thing that bugs me is wondering how much that battery will cost in 3 years when it finally gives out. But yeah, I had to eat my words a little bit after trying one out.

Found out most commercial cleaning contracts in Detroit are way overpriced for what you get.

That comment about the "hidden city resource thing" got me grinning. I once tried to find a plumber through something similar and ended up on a municipal website from 2004 that still listed a guy whose voicemail said "This is Joe, leave a message at the beep." So I feel your pain on stumbling across actual useful government info, it's like finding a $20 bill in an old coat. But that price difference is wild, $2,000 vs $800 is basically paying for someone to buff the doorknobs with diamond dust. I guess some companies figure nobody will check, just like I figure nobody will notice I'm still using a flip phone in 2024.
