Stop ignoring the 'low battery' beep on your smoke detector, trust me on this one

Last month our detector started chirping at 2am and I figured I'd deal with it in the morning. By the third night I was so used to it I didn't even hear it anymore, then the real alarm went off while we were frying chicken and it was dead silent. Took a full 20 minutes to find the smoke because I couldn't hear anything, we got lucky. Has anyone else zoned out a beep like that and regretted it later?
