TIL those cheap plastic post caps from the hardware store actually hold up.

Yeah but what's the actual labor warranty look like? Because a $4,800 install on a 200 foot vinyl fence means somebody cut corners somewhere, maybe on the concrete footings or the depth of the post holes. You ever seen a vinyl fence start leaning after one good storm because they only set the posts 18 inches deep? That's the kind of thing you get when the price is that low. And those cheap post caps they throw in, they're usually just glued on instead of screwed, so they pop right off in the wind. What exactly did the contract say about the post installation?

Found a cracked shutter blade on a vintage Nikon F2 at a thrift shop in Austin

Man, I feel you on that. I picked up a beat up Canon FTb at a flea market last year for $20 and thought I scored big, but the shutter sounded like a bag of rocks at high speeds. Turned out the blades were warped from someone trying to clean them with a solvent or something. @umak89 is right about thrift stores testing your patience - sometimes the deals end up being more trouble than they're worth. On the F2 though, I'd say check around for a used curtain assembly from a donor body. They're pretty common on eBay for under $100, and swapping them isn't that bad if you've already had the mirror box out. Parting it out could work too, but you might end up sitting on parts for months.

Got schooled by a 70 year old pitmaster at a competition last month

Roy absolutely wrecked my whole foil game too... I used to wrap like it was a hostage situation with that death grip. Figured if I squeezed hard enough the smoke flavor would stay in there or something. Now I'm out here with peach paper looking like a total rookie convert and loving every second of it.

Vent: That week when my entire bullet journal system fell apart over a dentist visit

Gonna push back a bit here @the_susan. That oil change thing sounds more like a failure to plan than a system falling apart. If you book an oil change without checking if they take walk-ins or appointments, that's on you, not the calendar. The root canal thing too - everyone knows medical stuff can run long, so why cram your whole week around one appointment? Leave buffer days. The system works fine if you build in 20% wiggle room instead of pretending life runs on rails. Your reminder from Monday lingering to Thursday? That's just a digital note you ignored, not a testament to how planner apps fail.

TIL my French press was brewing wrong for 3 years straight

Oh man, that's rough. I had a similar thing with a Chemex - kept getting a weird papery taste no matter how much I rinsed the filters. Turned out I was storing them in a cabinet right above where my roommates kept a box of dryer sheets. Vents and all that. Swapped to an unbleached filter and kept it in a drawer downstairs and it fixed everything. Sometimes it's the dumb stuff you'd never think of.
