Serious question, I heard a guy at my local shop in Akron say 'real fans only read the classics' and it got me thinking about gatekeeping.

So what changed your mind exactly? Was it just hearing how you sounded out loud, or did somebody actually call you out on it back then. I've noticed a lot of people who were that way just kind of drifted away from it without a real moment of clarity. Always curious what flips that switch in someone's head.

Refund policy at that local hardware store near downtown used to be a handshake

Actually, 14 months is a lot more than the 12 month return window they used to have posted by the register. They probably just updated their system to match the big box stores.

Stumbled on a stat that carpet holds 4x its weight in dirt before it looks dirty

Kinda feel like this is a bit dramatic, man. I mean, yeah, air filters get dirty, but you just swap em out every few months and it's fine. Gutters too - you can literally see leaves piling up if you look from a ladder, not exactly "hiding in plain sight" like some deep mystery. Half the stuff people worry about in houses is just normal wear and tear that you fix when it breaks. Not saying ignore it, but caked on dust on the back of a filter ain't exactly the same as a secret mold colony growing in your walls.

Appreciation post: Saw a guy at a site in Tampa using a screwdriver to check for voltage

Cardboard shims under a water heater is actually fine for leveling as long as you're not stacking them a foot high. The heat from the bottom of the tank isn't going to ignite cardboard unless you've got a gas leak or something else seriously wrong. I've seen plumbers use old roofing shingles and even hardwood floor scraps for decades without any issues, and those aren't fire rated either. The main thing is keeping the floor dry and checking your connections once in a while, the shim material barely matters if you're not letting water pool under there.

Saw a neighbor's Ring doorbell feed shared at a block party and it bothered me

Is it really that serious though? It's just a delivery guy.
