Dropped $180 on a 'certified' ultrasonic thickness gauge from a guy in Baton Rouge and it was a paperweight
Saw a Facebook Marketplace listing for a used ultrasonic thickness gauge, guy swore it was calibrated last month and had the cert to prove it. Got it home, tried it on a known 1/2 inch plate at the shop and the readings were all over the place, jumping between 0.38 and 0.71. Took it to a local NDT shop in Beaumont and they said the transducer was shot and a new one would run me almost as much as the tool. Anyone got a reliable source for used UT gear or should I just eat the cost and buy new from a real dealer?
I used to roll my eyes at guys who said just buy new, figured they were dealer shills or something. Then I bought a used $300 gauge off eBay that read fine on my test block and crapped out two weeks later on a real job. Now I get it, warranty and a real cert are worth the extra cash when you're betting on readings that keep people safe. That said, if you still want used, call around to the NDT shops near you and ask if they have trade-ins, since at least they'll check the transducer before selling. Lesson learned for me either way, for what it's worth.
