Shoutout to the guy at a Denver bus stop who said 'you look like you needed to hear this' and then gave me the best advice about asking for help
I was sitting at a bus stop on Colfax in Denver last Tuesday, 3 days after getting turned down for a job I wanted, just staring at my shoes. A guy maybe 60 years old sat down and said 'you look like you needed to hear this' and then told me he'd been fired from 4 jobs before he turned 30 and the only thing that saved him was learning to ask people for help instead of pretending he had it all figured out. He said he started by asking one person a week, just one, for something small like a phone number or a ride. I tried it last week and asked my old boss if he knew anyone hiring, and he gave me 2 names the same day. I never got the guy's name and he got on the 15 bus before I could say thanks. What's the smallest thing a stranger has said to you that stuck way longer than it should have?
you look like you needed to hear this" is such a simple line but it hits hard because he noticed you first. A lady at a laundromat once told me "you can't fix everything today, so just fix one thing" and I still think about it like 6 years later. We never even traded names, she just said it while folding socks and left lol. Sometimes the randos know more than the people we pay to listen.
