Spilled a full cup of coffee on my weekly spread yesterday

I was setting up my journal at the kitchen table before work. My mug tipped over and soaked the whole right page. I blotted it with a paper towel, then let it dry flat for about an hour. The ink smeared a bit, but I just went over the faded parts with a fresh pen and added a little coffee stain doodle in the corner. Has anyone else salvaged a page after a spill? What did you use?

Just hit 500 elevator door adjustments on my own, and it feels weird.

I was looking through my old job tickets from the last five years and added them up. I've personally adjusted or replaced the rollers, hangers, or closers on exactly 500 sets of elevator doors, mostly in older office buildings downtown. It's a small thing, but it made me realize how much of this job is just doors. Anyone else keep a rough count of a specific repair they've done a ton of?

I always figured the Clovis people were the first in the Americas, but a podcast changed my mind

I was listening to an episode about the White Sands footprints in New Mexico. They dated those human tracks to 23,000 years ago, which is way before the Clovis timeline. It made me realize the peopling of the continents was a lot more complex than a single migration event. Has anyone else dug into the evidence from sites like that?

My tent pole snapped on the Lost Coast Trail last month

Honestly, it was the second night out and a big gust came through our camp near Mattole Beach. Heard this loud crack and my tent just sagged on one side. The pole section split right at a joint, maybe from a weak spot or just old age. I had to use some duct tape and a tent stake as a splint to get it to hold for the night. Tbh, I was worried we'd have to bail early, but it held up okay for the last two days if we were careful setting it up. Packing it away was a pain though, had to keep the broken piece separate. Has anyone else had a pole break miles from the trailhead? What's your go-to trail fix?

My writing teacher told me to never use flashbacks and it almost ruined my story

In a workshop at the community college, the instructor said flashbacks are lazy and told our whole class to avoid them completely. I was working on a story about a woman finding her grandfather's old letters, and I cut all the past scenes. The draft felt flat, like just a list of things happening now. I put one short flashback to 1944 back in, right when she opens the first envelope, and the whole piece clicked. Has anyone else been given a hard rule that just didn't work for your specific plot?

My internet went out for a full day right in the middle of a 'Severance' marathon.

It happened on Tuesday, right after the big cliffhanger at the end of episode five. I ended up just staring at my router's blinking red light for a while, then read a book. What's the best show you've had to pause a binge on at the worst possible moment?

Can we talk about how many folks are overheating their high carbon steel during normalizing?

I saw three separate videos this month where the steel was glowing a bright orange, which is way too hot and will just create more stress, not relieve it, so aim for a dull red heat and let it cool in still air.

Remember when we had to plot everything on vellum at the big city permit office?

I was waiting in line for two hours back in 2010 to get a set of plans stamped, and the clerk pointed out a tiny dimension error. Had to redo the whole sheet right there. Now I triple-check my title block before I even save the PDF. Do you still find yourself using any of those old-school double-check habits even with digital submissions?

Pro tip: I found a weird way to get better answers when you ask for help online

I was stuck trying to fix a weird noise in my car for a week. I posted in a forum asking 'what's this sound?' and got no good replies. Then I posted again with a video and the exact phrase 'it's a 2010 Civic, and the squeak happens after driving for 20 minutes.' A mechanic from Phoenix replied with the fix in an hour. So, is it better to ask a super broad question and hope, or to give every single detail you can think of right from the start? What's your method?

Can we talk about how I finally got my hollandaise to hold for service?

I was always in a panic during weekend brunch because my hollandaise would break or get grainy after sitting for maybe 20 minutes. I tried everything, even keeping the bowl over a barely warm water bath. Then this cook from a hotel in Portland told me to blend in a single ice cube right at the end, after I'd taken it off the heat. I was sure it would ruin it, but I gave it a shot last Sunday. I made my usual batch with 6 yolks and a pound of butter, and right when it was perfect, I dropped in one small ice cube and blended it smooth. That sauce held for the entire three hour service without splitting. It just sat there on the station, perfectly silky. I think the tiny bit of water from the melting cube stabilizes the emulsion in a way extra butter doesn't. Has anyone else tried this trick, or do you have a different method for a bulletproof hollandaise?
