I binged all 3 seasons last year then picked up the first book and realized the show merged like 4 different timelines into one messy plot. The books have this cold, layered mystery that just doesn't survive the Netflix rewrite. Has anyone else gone show-first and then felt cheated going back to the source material?

Watching Dune after reading it changed my mind on the movie

I hated the 2021 Dune movie when it came out. Read the book back in college and thought the film missed all the internal politics. Then last month I did a re-read and a re-watch back to back. The movie actually captures the vibe better than I gave it credit for. The sandworm scenes and the way they handled Paul's visions made more sense the second time. Still think they cut too much of the Baron's scheming though. Has anyone else flipped on an adaptation after a second try?

I read The Shining in print back in 2018 and thought it was fine, but last month I tried the audiobook narrated by Campbell Scott on a 6 hour drive to Portland. Hearing Jack's slow spiral in real time with headphones made the hotel feel way creepier than any page turn ever did. The print version wins for detail, but audio wins for pure dread. After reading the first 3 books, I tried watching the show on Amazon Prime last spring. The actors were great, but they merged two characters into one and cut a whole subplot about the protomolecule that I loved. The Reacher casting debate split my book club in two last night

The Shining miniseries vs Kubrick, which one wins after 3 rewatches

I watched the 1997 TV version last week after doing the 1980 movie again, and honestly the book fans have a point. Kubrick got the creepy atmosphere right but made Wendy super weak and left out the boiler subplot entirely. The movie version of The Hobbit made me re-read the book twice

Had to pick between the show and the audiobook for The Three Body Problem, chose wrong

So I finished the book trilogy last month and wanted to revisit it before the series drops. I had 2 options, the Netflix show or the audiobook on my commute. I picked the show because I figured visual effects would sell the Trisolaran stuff better. Big mistake. The show cut so much of the science and the human stakes, it felt like a totally different story. Now I'm 8 hours into the audiobook and it's way closer to what I remember, the pacing actually builds. Has anyone else had an adaptation mislead them on a book they already read?

My sister said read the book first, I went to the movie anyway

My sister told me to read The Giver before seeing the film, but I figured the movie would cover it well enough. I sat through the whole thing and walked out confused about the ending, it skipped so much of the world building. Then I borrowed her copy, finished it in two nights, and realized the movie left out half the meaning. She just looked at me and said, "Told you so" in that calm way she does. Rant: That 12 hour movie trilogy cut was a mistake

A buddy talked me into watching the fan edit that merges all three Hobbit films into one 6 hour sitting. We made it 4 hours before his dog ate my leftover pizza and I called it. Cost me $18 for the digital rental and a whole Sunday I'll never get back. The original book took me 2 days to read and felt tighter somehow. Hit 100 book adaptations logged and my spreadsheet is judging me

I started tracking every book to movie/show adaptation I watch back in January, just a simple note on my phone. Last night I hit number 100 when I finished the new version of The Three-Body Problem on Netflix. Turns out I prefer the 2009 Chinese series over the Netflix one, the pacing just hits different when it spans 30 episodes. Now I'm second guessing my whole ranking system because 100 is a big round number, how do you all organize your adaptation watch lists without going insane?

Told my buddy the book was boring, he made me watch the show first, now I get why the book worked

So I read Dune back in March and honestly I struggled through it. Too many names, too much politics, I told my buddy it was overrated. He didn't argue, just said watch the 2021 movie first and then go back to the book. I did that last week and man, I was wrong. Seeing the visuals first gave me a map for all that weird jargon. The second read felt completely different, I actually cared about Paul this time. I think for some adaptations, the show or movie can be a better entry point than the book. Anyone else found that watching the screen version first made the book click for them? Or is that just me being a slow reader?

Watching the show first ruined the book for me, and I'm honestly shocked

I finally got around to reading The Expanse after watching all 6 seasons over the last year or so. I figured I'd enjoy the books even more since everyone says they're richer. But I kept getting bored because I already knew every twist. The reveal about the protomolecule, the weird stuff on Ilus, all of it landed flat. It felt like rereading spoilers instead of discovering a story. I think going book first is the only way for me now. Has anyone else hit this where the show killed their enjoyment of the source material? Or am I just weird for needing the surprise?

Bought the Dark Tower audiobook set, wasted $85 on this mess

I really wanted to love the Dark Tower adaptation hype, so I grabbed the full audiobook collection last month for $85. The narrator switches voices between books and it drove me crazy, plus the story drags so much in book 4 that I stopped halfway. The movie was bad too, but at least it was only 2 hours of my life. Has anyone else shelled out big money on a book set and then felt ripped off by how it translated on screen?

I finally read the book last month after watching that movie years ago, and I honestly can't believe how much they cut. They removed the entire escape sequence with the other prisoners and turned a 1000 page revenge story into a 2 hour action flick.
