That stat about creosote buildup rate really caught me off guard

I was reading through some NFPA reports last week and found out that a 1/8 inch layer of creosote can cut your flue draft by nearly 30 percent. Never would have guessed that small of a deposit makes that big of a difference. I always thought you needed a solid quarter inch before it started messing with performance. Has anyone else run into weird efficiency drops from what seemed like a light coating?

Had to choose between the cheap grocery bags or the reusable ones at checkout yesterday

I was at Aldi in Columbus and forgot my reusable bags again in the car. Faced that 10 cent per bag decision. I grabbed the cheap plastic ones because I was in a hurry and had 12 items. Now I feel guilty seeing them in my cabinet, knowing I'll probably toss them after one use. Does anyone actually remember to bring their bags every single trip, or do you just accept the cost? I'm thinking of leaving a set in my trunk full time.

Chat with an old timer made me rethink how I torque control cables

I was helping this retired mechanic bench test a harness last Wednesday and he told me to back off the torque wrench on those small terminal block screws. He said I was crushing the copper strands, making them brittle after a few heat cycles. I never even thought about over-tightening wires that small since I always just went by feel. Has anyone else had a connector fail later from being too tight at the install?

I finally bought a $45 sleeping pad inflator and it blew my mind on the first trip

That $80 'artisan' bread flour was just regular flour in a fancy bag

I bought this expensive bread flour from a local mill's booth at the farmers market last Saturday for $80 for a 25 pound bag. It claimed to be special heritage grain and all that. Made two loaves and they turned out exactly like my usual $5 store brand flour. I emailed the mill asking for the protein percentage and they never replied. Anyone else get suckered by overpriced flour with no actual difference?

Still frustrated about that gate post alignment nightmare

I spent 4 hours trying to get a double gate post perfectly plumb on a sloped yard in Birmingham last month. Everyone says to just use a string line and a level, but the slope kept throwing my measurements off by almost 2 inches. I ended up having to dig the hole 3 times deeper and brace it with extra gravel before it finally held. Has anyone else dealt with gates sagging on an uneven grade like that?

My neighbor showed me I've been loading the dishwasher wrong for 7 years

He pointed out that my plates were all facing the same direction which traps water on the top. Now I angle them inward and stuff actually comes out dry. Has anyone else had a kitchen habit they only fixed after someone called them out?

My grandma's old pattern vs. modern fabric calculators

I used to just eyeball everything when I was sewing clothes a few years ago. I'd cut fabric based on what my grandma taught me, and I wasted a ton of material. Last winter I finally tried one of those online fabric calculators for a dress pattern. It told me I needed 2.3 yards instead of the 3 I was guessing. Saved me 7 bucks on that project alone. Pro tip: Going electric vs staying with gas for a lawn mower is a tougher call than I thought

I had to pick between a cordless electric mower and keeping my old gas one. My yard is about a quarter acre, so not huge but not tiny either. I went with the electric after my neighbor let me try his. First few cuts were fine, quiet, no gas smell, but then the battery died with a strip left to do. Took an hour to recharge. On the flip side, the gas mower always started and never ran out of juice, but it was loud and I hated storing fuel. Anyone else make this switch and regret it or love it? What did you do about the battery life issue?

Is it just me or does everyone crowd the basket too much?

Man those sad soldier fries are the worst. My last batch looked like they'd given up on life halfway through the cook time. Had to eat them with a fork just to feel something. Should have just tossed them in the air fryer for a few more minutes but I got impatient. At least they had some salt to keep them company in their final moments.

Just read that a 2023 survey found 40% of phone repairs are for screens, but water damage is still the priciest fix on average. Found it in a trade mag at the shop.

@kaiblack Yeah basically. Water damage usually means corrosion on the board, maybe the charging port, speaker grilles, and battery connector all at once. A screen is just one part swap but water makes you replace half the phone's guts. Plus those parts have to be sourced and tested, shops charge more for the labor since it takes hours to clean and dry everything properly. If the corrosion is bad enough you're literally paying for a whole new phone just in a salvage shell.

Had a client last Tuesday tell me my highlights were too 'chunky' - she showed me a pic from 2004 and said 'like this'

Honestly I gotta push back a little on this one. I've been doing hair for about 12 years now and I've seen trends come back around more than once. Chunky highlights never really went away for everyone, they just went underground for a bit. Your client saw a specific look she liked and you spent more time talking her out of it than just giving her what she asked for. I mean sure, modern balayage is popular right now but who's to say chunky streaks won't be on magazine covers next year? The whole "that technique is super outdated" thing rubs me the wrong way. You could have done a modern take on chunky highlights instead of pushing her toward something she didn't want. Take this with a grain of salt but I think sometimes stylists get too caught up in what's trendy and forget the client might actually know what they want.
