Impact gun vs breaker bar on rusty caliper bolts, lesson learned

Spent yesterday at a 2014 F-150 in Fort Worth trying to get the rear caliper brackets off. Impact gun just spun and hammered for 10 minutes, no luck. Grabbed my 24" breaker bar with a cheater pipe and they broke free in under 2 minutes each, but I snapped one bolt head clean off doing it. Next time I'm hitting them with a torch first then the impact, that rust is no joke around here. Anyone else find the breaker bar is the only way on Texas trucks, or do you have a better method?

Stopped for coffee off I-40 and watched three rigs pull in, every single one had dried pink crust around the same lower hose clamp. My own truck does the same thing after a long downhill haul into Arizona heat. Is there a trick to keeping those worm gear clamps tight past 5,000 miles without overtorquing the hose?

I was chatting with a dispatcher who runs 40 delivery vans through our shop in Columbus, and he said they pull oil samples at 7,500 miles instead of following the 3,000 mile rule. He showed me lab reports where the oil still had plenty of life left at that mark, and it got me wondering how many customers I've been upselling into early changes without real data. PSA: Check your brake line brackets before they fail

Last month in Tulsa I had a customer's truck come in with a soft pedal, traced it to a corroded steel line that had rubbed clean through inside a worn bracket. Took less than an hour to replace the line and add a rubber isolator, but it could've been a tow bill and a much worse repair if it let go on the highway. Anyone else make a habit of inspecting those brackets on older frames during routine oil changes?

Bleeding brakes solo, the $12 vacuum pump vs the old two person way

I spent last Saturday in Phoenix fighting a spongy pedal on my F-150 after a caliper swap. Using the cheap hand vacuum pump from Harbor Freight got all the air out in one pass, while my buddy and I spent 40 minutes the old way and still had bubbles. Has anyone else found the vacuum method works better on ABS systems, or did I just get lucky?

Took me 10 years to stop fighting torque specs on aluminum threads

After I snapped a third intake bolt on a Subaru last June and the shop foreman just shook his head and said 'you ever heard of a thread chaser, mate,' I finally bought a decent one and now I never touch a dirty or old thread with a tap, that's what changed my whole approach, anyone else still learning that taps cut metal but chasers just clean it?

Pulled a 2012 Civic in for a rough idle yesterday, and after 20 minutes of chasing vacuum leaks I found a half-eaten acorn wedged under the intake manifold. Why does nobody talk about the dust in brake lathes at chain shops?

Stopped by a big chain shop in Tallahassee last Tuesday to grab a rotor, and the tech let me peek in the back. That brake lathe had dust caked in every corner, maybe 3 months of buildup, and nobody seemed to care. I get that chains push speed, but breathing that stuff all day has to wreck your lungs. Anyone else seen this at their shop or am I the only one who cleans that thing weekly?

The $60 impact wrench from Harbor Freight that everyone said was junk, actually saved a 3 hour job last Friday

Customer rolls in with a seized lug nut on a 2014 Silverado, we've got the breaker bar and a cheater pipe going at it for 45 minutes, nothing. Tech next to me says try his old Earthquake, I laughed because that thing is so beat up it looks like it survived a war. Hook it up, one hit and that nut cracked loose. Bought my own on the way home. Is there any tool you guys thought was a waste of money that ended up being the one you reach for every day?

Sent a customer home with a bad brake master cylinder, still second-guessing my call

Last Tuesday in my shop near Tulsa, a guy brought in a 2012 F-150 with a soft pedal and no visible leaks, so I bench bled the new master cylinder and replaced it, but the pedal still sinks to the floor after a few pumps. I told him it needs a full ABS module bleed at the dealer, but now I wonder if I missed a failing brake hose that only expands under pressure. Has anyone else dealt with a scenario where the master cylinder swap doesn't fix the pedal and you have to go back to basics on the whole system?

Warranty work vs cash jobs, which side are you on?

Last Monday I had a 2018 Silverado come in with a bad AC compressor under warranty. Took me 3 hours because of a rusty bracket, but the customer paid nothing and the dealership reimbursed me at 0.8 hours. Meanwhile a cash job, same compressor swap, took me 2 hours and the guy paid $450 on the spot. I get that warranty keeps the lights on, but does anyone else feel like the flat rate book is way off for older vehicles? How do you all balance taking the dealer jobs versus telling customers to go elsewhere?

Had a change of heart about paying for diagnostics after visiting that shop in Dayton

I used to be the guy who thought paying 100 bucks for a diagnostic was a scam. Always figured I could figure it out myself with a cheap code reader and some forum digging. Found out I was torquing lug nuts wet for 8 years, now I feel stupid

Was working on a buddy's truck last week in his garage. He asked why I was hitting the torque wrench 'click' on a dry thread and I said what do you mean. He handed me a shop manual from 1998 that said torque specs are for clean dry threads only. I always thought the oil on the studs was helping. Now I have to re-torque every wheel I've done since I started at the Firestone in Dayton back in 2016. Anyone else learn this from a random manual instead of a senior tech?

Drain socket finally beat my old Phillips head stubborn streak

For 12 years I fought stripped drain plugs with a chisel and hammer, thinking it was faster than hunting for the right tool. Then last month in Modesto, a Civic's plug rounded off so bad the chisel slipped and I gashed my knuckle over a $3 part. The shop owner tossed me his 3/8" drain socket with the internal teeth, and it grabbed with one click. Now I keep two in my box and honestly use them before the wrench even comes out. I told him because this truck doesnt have one, but it got me realizing how much of what I teach is habit instead of logic. Had a job last week on a rusty F-250 in Omaha. Lower control arm bolt would not budge. Broke out the Ingersoll Rand air impact, no luck. That alignment rack readout made me question my torque wrench

Had a 2018 F-150 come in Tuesday with a pull to the right. I checked tire pressure, rotated, swapped front tires, still pulled. Customer swears they just had an alignment done at a big chain 3 weeks ago. I put it on my rack and the camber was off by 1.2 degrees on the passenger side. Turns out the other shop never even charged the battery on their rack, it was running off memory. Now I write the date on the battery with a sharpie every time I calibrate, costs me 5 minutes. How many of you actually trust the numbers when a car comes from those quick lube alignment places? Has anyone else caught a shop skipping the calibration step?

Air ratchets used to be a joke, now I own three

Back in the 90s I swore by my breaker bar and hated the old pneumatic ones, they never had any torque. Then my partner in Phoenix bought an Aircat 1150 and made me use it on a seized lower control arm bolt, that thing popped it free like butter. Now I keep one in the truck, one in the shop, and one at home for side jobs. Anyone else come around on a tool they used to trash talk?

Torque wrench click was lying to me for 2 years

I kept snapping wheel studs on the passenger side of my F-150. Took me until last Tuesday to realize I was holding the torque wrench wrong. I was gripping the handle near the head and pushing sideways instead of pulling straight. Borrowed my buddy's digital wrench from his shop in Akron and the difference was 18 ft-lbs off. Has anyone else had a torque wrench lie to them because of bad grip technique?

Hit 1,000 brake jobs last month and it felt weird

I was just doing the books last month and counted up my brake jobs. Somehow I hit 1,000 since I started at my shop in Denver back in 2014. That number surprised me because I never keep track, I just do the work. Most of them were on F-150s and Suburbans, probably 80% pads and rotors. It made me think about how many rusty calipers I've wrestled with over the years. Has anyone else ever counted up a specific repair they've done a ton of?

Dropped $450 on a cordless impact and it barely spins a lug nut

Tbh I should have known better than to buy the off brand from a hardware store, but I figured for light use itd hold up. Has anyone else had luck with cheaper impacts or am I just cursed with bad choices?
