PSA: My weekly food bill went from $120 to $75 by switching one thing

For the past two months, I tracked every grocery dollar. I was spending about $120 a week for two people, mostly on fresh meat and veggies. The change came when I started buying whole chickens instead of just breasts or thighs. One $8 chicken gives us two dinners of roast chicken, then I use the bones for soup stock that makes another meal. Has anyone else found a single switch that cut their costs this much?

PSA: I just found out my house's original siding was installed without a vapor barrier

I was pulling off some old cedar clapboard on my 1978 ranch to replace a rotten section, and there was just bare sheathing behind it. No paper, no plastic, nothing. I looked it up in a building code history book from the library, and apparently that was common practice here in Ohio until the early 80s. Now I'm worried about moisture getting into the walls from the inside out. Has anyone else had to retrofit a vapor barrier during a re-siding job?

Got a call for a 'haunted' dryer in a house near the old mill road

The owner said it would start a full cycle on its own at 2 AM, no one near it. I checked the usual stuff, then found a tiny field mouse had built a nest in the control panel... its weight on the start button was enough to press it. Cleaned it out, put some steel wool in the vent hole, and it's been fine for a week now. Anyone else had an animal cause a weird fault like that?

That time a coolant line clog turned into a three hour treasure hunt

Had a job last week on the old VF-2 where the coolant just stopped hitting the tool. Figured it was a simple clog, maybe a chip in the line. I spent the first hour checking all the usual spots, the filter, the pump screen, even the nozzle itself. Nothing. My boss walks by and says, 'You're still on that?' which was great. Finally, I'm laying on the floor with a flashlight and I see it. A tiny piece of blue shop towel, the kind we use for wiping parts, had gotten sucked up through the pump and was wedged in a 90 degree elbow deep in the cabinet. It must have fallen in days ago. Three hours total for a two inch scrap of rag. Has anyone else found a truly ridiculous thing blocking their coolant flow?

Hot take: I finally tried that new clear coat from the shop in Tempe and my old brand just can't keep up.

Had a 2018 F-150 hood to do last week and sprayed half with my usual stuff and half with their 'Diamond Clear'. After baking, the Tempe stuff laid down smoother and had way less orange peel right out of the gate. It saved me about 20 minutes of sanding and buffing on that panel alone. Anyone else made a switch recently that actually cut down your finishing time?

My buddy made me watch 'The Room' for the first time and I'm still confused

So last Friday, my friend Mike comes over with a DVD and says we have to watch this movie, it's a classic. He puts on 'The Room' and within ten minutes I'm looking at him like he's crazy. The acting is so bad it's almost good, the story makes zero sense, and there's a weird amount of football tossing in an alley. The best part was when a character just says 'I definitely have breast cancer' out of nowhere and it's never talked about again. We spent the whole two hours laughing and yelling at the screen, trying to figure out what was happening. It was honestly more fun than most good movies I've seen this year. Has anyone else had that experience where a movie is so bad it loops back around to being a great time?

A pilot tried to tell me how to do my job on a turnaround in Phoenix

We were pushing back a 737 at Sky Harbor last summer, and I spotted a small hydraulic leak on the right main gear. I flagged it to the captain, who came out to look. He stood there with his arms crossed and said, 'That's just seepage, it's within limits. We need to go.' I told him I needed to check the service manual and measure the fluid loss over 15 minutes. He actually sighed and said, 'Look, I've been flying these birds for twenty years. I know when it's fine.' I had to hold my ground and say the book says what it says, and we ended up delaying the flight for an hour while I confirmed it was a bad seal. He was fuming in the cockpit the whole time. When does a pilot's experience ever override the maintenance manual? Has a pilot ever pressured you to sign off on something you weren't sure about?

I swore by my old 60 liter pack for years until the hip belt buckle snapped halfway up the Wonderland Trail.

I had to use a carabiner and some paracord from my repair kit to rig it for the last 40 miles, so what's your go-to fix for a broken buckle on the trail?

TIL that sealing my concrete patio before summer made a huge difference

I left half of my patio unsealed last year as a test, and the side I sealed still looks new while the other side is all faded and stained from the sun. I used a basic acrylic sealer from the hardware store on Central, and it only took me about two hours to put it on. The sealed part just hoses clean now, and the color is way more even. Has anyone else tried a different kind of sealer here in town that held up better?

My bullet journal tracker hit 500 days straight and I didn't even know I was close

I have a simple habit tracker in my journal for daily reading. I just fill in a little square each night. I was setting up my new monthly spread last night and flipped back through the old pages out of curiosity. I started counting the filled squares from the last year and a half, and I was shocked to find I had marked off 500 days in a row. I never set out to build a streak that long. I just liked the act of coloring in that box. It made me realize the journal wasn't just planning my days, it was quietly showing me a pattern I had built without any pressure. That number felt more real than any app notification. It proved I could stick with something small and see a big result. Has anyone else been surprised by a number their own tracking revealed?
