Check if the change lines up with her arc. If she went through hell and came out softer, that's good writing. Might just need to tweak a few early lines to hint at the person she'll become.

Man, that's scary. We had a close call like that a few years back, just some sparks hitting an old patio chair cushion. Now I keep our pit a good thirty feet from the house and any trees.
