Tried using avocado oil for searing steaks and it smoked out my entire kitchen

I thought I was being smart using avocado oil with its high smoke point for a crust on ribeyes last night, but my apartment in Denver filled with smoke within 2 minutes. The oil was smoking before the pan even got hot enough to sear, and now I'm wondering if I got a bad batch or if I'm just missing something. Anybody else have avocado oil burn on them way below what it's supposed to handle?

Three seasons of fighting with my sled till a mechanic pointed out my carb was set wrong

I've been messing with my 2015 Skidoo for like 3 winters, blaming bad fuel and crappy spark plugs for why it bogged down every time I hit deep powder. Last month at a trailside stop in Grayling, an old guy just walks over, listens to it idle for ten seconds, and says 'your pilot screw is three turns out too far, buddy'. Has anyone else had one simple fix make them feel like an idiot for months?

Old timer told me to soak my rasps in vinegar overnight... I thought he was nuts

Guy named Hank at the Oklahoma State Farrier Conference last year swore by it. Said it eats the rust and gunk without ruining the file. I figured what the heck, left my two favorite rasps in a bucket of white vinegar for about 10 hours. Pulled em out, rinsed em off, and holy cow they cut like new. No scrubbing, no wire brush. Just gotta oil em after so they don't flash rust. Has anyone else tried this or am I gonna wreck my tools long term?

That cheap paint job cost me $600 in rework, debating if it was really a waste

I painted my living room last summer with some $18 per gallon house brand paint from the local hardware store. Let me tell you, it looked great for about two months. Then I started seeing these weird spots where the paint just peeled off, especially near the windows where the sun hits. I tried touching it up but the new paint wouldn't stick right either. After a few coats that still looked blotchy, I finally broke down and hired a guy who used Sherwin-Williams Duration. That redo cost me $600 between the labor and the real paint. So here's the debate: was I stupid for trying to save $40 on the cheap stuff, or is it normal to learn this lesson the hard way? Has anyone else burned money on budget paint and regretted it, or do some cheap brands actually hold up in your experience?

I always thought writer's block was this big psychological wall or whatever. But last week I found this stat online that said 80% of writers who think they have block actually just haven't found the right prompt or angle yet. That hit me hard because I've been staring at a blank page for like 3 days. Is it really just about needing a better starting point or is there something real to the block? What side are you on?

Paid $150 for a fancy closet organizer kit that totally flopped

That cheap gas range igniter almost burned my van down

I picked up a universal igniter kit from a flea market in Newark for $8 last month. Installed it on a Frigidaire range, worked fine for two days, then the wiring harness shorted and started smoking inside the control panel. Learned the hard way that those no-name Chinese modules don't have thermal fuses or proper insulation - spend the extra $15 for a supco or whirlpool part or you'll be replacing the whole board.

Showerthought: That $200 diagnostic tool I bought was a total waste

I picked up a fancy multimeter with all these extra features from some online store about six months ago. Cost me $200 because I thought I needed it for complex board repairs. Turns out my old $40 Fluke does everything I actually need for 90% of the jobs I do. The extra bells and whistles just sit there collecting dust in my bag. I really should have just stuck with what worked and saved that cash for more thermal paste or a good soldering iron. Has anyone else bought a tool that looked amazing in the ad but ended up being useless for your daily work?
