For the longest time I would just toss sleeved cards back in the box after a session, not caring about orientation or evenness. Last month I started flipping every sleeve so the opening faces down before stacking them back in the insert. Since then, I haven't had a single corner get jammed up or a sleeve split during setup. Anyone else find that simple tricks like this make a big difference with their collection?

For years I would jump in and explain every possible move to new players, making sure they didn't miss the "best" strategy. Then last month at a local board game cafe in Portland, a guy told me I was sucking all the fun out of it by doing that. Now I shut up and let people figure stuff out on their own, even if they make bad moves. Has anyone else had to learn this lesson the hard way with their game group?

My $80 foam core cutter turned a simple box project into a disaster

I spent $80 on this fancy foam core cutter from a hobby shop thinking it would save me time making inserts for my game boxes. Instead, the blade skipped mid-cut and I carved a trench right through my precious copy of Terraforming Mars's lid liner. Now I'm stuck using cardboard scraps and hot glue to fix it. Has anyone else had a tool fail at the worst possible moment during a game upgrade?

I finally gave in and tried a solo board game after years of being against it

I used to think solo board games were just sad ways to play when you had no friends. Then I got stuck at home with a broken ankle for 3 weeks and got bored out of my mind. I picked up a copy of Sprawlopolis from my local shop since it was only $12 and small. It took me maybe 45 minutes to get the rules down, but after my first game I was hooked. Now I actually enjoy the quiet focus it gives me, no waiting for other people to take their turns. Has anyone else changed their mind about a type of game they swore they'd never play?

My buddy swore his homemade foamcore insert would fix my game box mess. It was a disaster.

Last month, my friend Dave from our Sunday game group said he could build a foamcore organizer for my Terraforming Mars box. He did it before for his own games and they looked solid. I handed over $20 for materials and waited. What I got back was a mess. The card slots were too tight, the player board slots were too loose, and the lid bulged a whole inch. I tried to use it once and pieces flew everywhere. Has anyone else had a so-called expert friend wreck their storage setup?

Tried a 24-hour solo game night and my group got jealous instead of worried

I set up a whole day to myself last Saturday with a stack of heavy euros I never get to play because my group hates long rulebooks. Started with Gaia Project at 8 AM and ended around midnight with a solo session of Spirit Island. Took photos and posted them in our group chat, and now three of them want to do their own solo marathons this month. Anybody else find that playing alone actually gets your group more interested in trying new games?

Hit 100 games in my collection this weekend and now I'm wondering if that's hoarding or dedication

I just crossed 100 board games on my shelf and honestly I'm split. Half of me feels like a champ, like I've built this awesome library for game nights. The other half looks at the stack of unplayed Kickstarters in the corner and wonders if I'm just collecting cardboard. My buddy says 100 is just the start, but my wife gave me the look. What's the number where it stops being a hobby and starts being a problem? Does it even matter as long as you play them?

My first attempt at metal minis went sideways fast

I picked up the "Rise of the Farmers" expansion for a trading game I love back in March. It was $60 and I was so excited to add more depth to the game nights. PSA: Stop calling every heavy game a "miniatures game"

I was at a game night last Saturday and someone described Scythe as a miniatures game. It has like 20 plastic mechs, sure, but that's not the core mechanic. This keeps happening at my local shop in Portland. I've heard people call Blood Rage a miniatures game too when the whole point is the area control and card drafting. Can we just agree that a miniatures game is something like Warhammer where the minis are the main focus, not just a bonus?

Appreciation post: the guy who swapped his minis for tokens mid-session

Last night at my local shop in Austin, this dude just stopped a game of Twilight Imperium after two hours. He pulled out a bag of plastic tokens and replaced all his painted minis with them. Said he was tired of the miniatures blocking line of sight and slowing down combat. Honestly at first I thought he was messing up the game. But after that change, his turns went from 5 minutes to under 2. He finished his objectives way faster because he wasn't fiddling with positioning. I’ve been thinking about trying it with my Gloomhaven set after seeing how smooth his game went. Has anyone else ditched minis for tokens and noticed a big speed bump?

Finally figured out why my games night attendance was dropping off

I compared my regular pizza-and-snacks setup to doing a proper potluck dinner before game night. After 6 months of struggling to get people to stay past 9pm I tried the potluck thing. The difference was NIGHT and day now folks actually show up hungry and hang around to play two rounds of Scythe instead of one. Has anyone else found that food choices make or break your group's energy?
