My old Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots seized up and I nearly wrecked it trying to fix it
Pulled my Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots out of a box at my parents' place in Cleveland two weeks ago and the red robot's arm was completely locked up, wouldn't throw a punch at all. I figured it was just gunk so I sprayed WD-40 in there like an idiot and it got worse, the whole gear box started grinding. Turns out the little plastic tab that holds the spring had cracked after sitting in a hot attic for 20 years, and the oil just made the crack slide around. I took the whole thing apart on my kitchen table, lost one tiny screw for a full day, and finally found it stuck to a magnet on my fridge. Got it back together with a drop of super glue on the tab and it throws punches again, but the left arm is slower than the right now. If you still have yours in a box somewhere, do not spray anything in the gears, just open it up and look for cracked plastic first. Did anyone else's break in a weird spot or am I the only one who made it worse before making it better?
Man, same thing happened to mine and I did the exact same dumb thing with the spray. What finally worked was cleaning out all that oil with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip before touching anything else, because the grease just kept letting the cracked tab slip. Then I scuffed up the tab with a little sandpaper so the glue had something to grip and used a tiny zip tie wrapped around it as a backup brace while the glue set. Left arm is still a hair slower on mine too, so you're not alone there. Also pro tip for the lost screws, lay a white towel down first so the little suckers can't bounce into the void.
