inI used to think those metal post drivers were a waste of money, but after using one on a 200-foot cedar fence job in Spokane last month, I'm a total convert.
A total convert seems a bit strong for a post driver. I get it saved you some time on that one fence, but it's just a heavy tube. For a couple posts I'd still just use the back of my digging bar. Maybe if you're doing that kind of work every single day it makes sense.

inHad a whole section of mud crack on me in a Denver basement last month
Oof, that's a rough one. Actually, letting the board dry for a full day might not be enough in a cold, damp basement. You really need to check it with a moisture meter first. I've seen guys rush that step and the new mud just fails again. A slower setting compound is the right move, but the prep has to be spot on.

inMy stubborn refusal to use a loupe for rangefinder alignment cost me a $400 repair job in Denver.
Been there, done that. A proper loupe is non-negotiable for rangefinder work, full stop. Trying to eyeball vertical alignment is just asking for trouble and a very unhappy client. That 10x loupe pays for itself the first time you catch a problem before the camera leaves your bench.

inTalking to a potter friend made me reconsider my hammer control
What if it's not just hitting stuff though? You're shaping it, @iris_jones89... making something new from what was there before.
