PSA: My old foreman was right about using a torque wrench on those M12 bolts

For years, I thought it was overkill to use a torque wrench on the M12 bolts for the motor mount plates in a standard traction unit. My old foreman, Mike, would always say, 'Just snug them up good and tight, you'll feel it.' I'd just use my impact driver set to low and call it a day. Well, last month on a job in Tacoma, I had to go back to a building because a motor was making a weird hum. Turns out, three of the eight bolts had worked loose over six months, just from vibration. The whole plate had shifted maybe an eighth of an inch, enough to throw the alignment off. I went back with my click-type torque wrench set to 80 ft-lbs, like the manual actually says, and the noise was gone in ten minutes. It was a total 'I told you so' moment in my head. Has anyone else had a simple spec bite them like that?

Tried that 'free city tour' in Prague and it cost me way more than expected

I joined a group in Old Town Square, and the guide said it was free but tips were welcome. After two hours, he gave a big speech about how his pay depends on us and stared everyone down. I felt so bad I gave 20 euros, which was half my food budget for the day. Has anyone else had a guide pressure them like that, and what's a better way to see a city for cheap?

Appreciation post: A broken tile at the community pool taught me a new trick

I was helping fix a cracked tile at the local rec center pool, and the old maintenance guy, Frank, showed me how to use a grout saw to undercut the mortar bed. I had always just tried to pry things out, which usually made a bigger mess. He said to cut a clean line about an eighth of an inch deep first, and the tile popped right out without damaging the ones next to it. Anyone have a different method for pulling a single tile without wrecking the surrounding ones?

My fiddle leaf fig was dying for months and I just figured out why

Kept giving it more water when the leaves got brown. My sister came over, stuck her finger in the dirt, and said 'this is swampy'. Realized I was drowning it. The pot didn't have a drain hole. How do you even fix that without killing the roots?

Finally swapped out my old, dull paring knife for a new Victorinox and the difference is night and day.

The old one was a cheap, no-name thing that came with a knife block years ago. I was just used to it, you know? It took way too much pressure to get through a tomato skin. Got the new one last week, and the first time I used it to supreme a grapefruit, I didn't even have to think about it. The blade just went where I wanted. It's not about having fancy gear, it's about not fighting your tools. What's one small upgrade you've made that saved you a surprising amount of effort?

I just realized I've written 1000 lines of code for my little text adventure game and it still barely works.

I mean, I started this Python project three weeks ago thinking it'd be simple, but hitting that line count and seeing how messy and broken it is makes me wonder if I'm doing this whole 'learning by doing' thing wrong.

Update: I used to think the Clovis people were first in the Americas

For years, I was sure the Clovis culture from around 13,000 years ago were the first people here. Then I read about the White Sands footprints in New Mexico, which are dated to about 23,000 years ago. That evidence totally changed my view on when humans actually arrived. Has anyone else had a long-held belief in archaeology flipped by a single find?

My kid clicked a link in a game chat and our router got hit

My son was playing Roblox last Tuesday and clicked a link from another player that said it gave free Robux. Within an hour, our home Wi-Fi in Austin slowed to a crawl and our smart lights started acting weird. I had to factory reset our Netgear Nighthawk router and change every single password, which took me all evening. Has anyone else had to deal with something like this from a kid's game?

TIL the FAA's new AD on the Cessna 172R flap actuator seems like overkill

I was at the Sun 'n Fun fly-in in Lakeland last week and got a look at the new service bulletin... everyone was talking about it like it was a must-do right now. I read the actual inspection criteria and it's for a specific batch of actuators with under 500 hours, but the chatter made it sound like every single one was grounded. Has anyone else actually had a failure, or is this just causing unnecessary panic and downtime?
