Had a flange gasket let go on a 300 psi steam line yesterday

That 300 psi main feed line is no joke, you can't mess around. Aaron's point on prep is dead on, but saying brand doesn't matter at all is a stretch. A cheap spiral-wound gasket from a no-name supplier might seal if everything is perfect, but a quality one from a known maker has better fill and can handle a little more surface variation. It's not an either-or thing, you need both the right part and the right process.

Warning: putting a tip jar out at my shop on 6th Street actually cut into my sales

Actually sales dropped right after the jar went out.

Had a close call with a power line on a site in Tacoma last month

It's the digital maps that get me now. We had a utility locator come out with a tablet, showing a water main deep underground in bright green. His screen said it was all clear to dig. The backhoe hit a six-inch cast iron line from 1912 that wasn't on any digital file, only a brittle paper map in the city archive. The tech just shrugged and said his system didn't have it loaded. Makes you trust your gut over the glowing screen every time.

Rant: A guy in my chair yesterday said he trims his own beard with kitchen scissors.

Show them the hair they just cut off, like a trophy from a bad decision. It makes the damage real and harder to argue with. Sometimes you gotta let the proof do the talking.
