Spent $40 on a 'smart' egg timer that beeps from inside the fridge

I bought this thing online because I kept forgetting about hard boiled eggs. It's a little puck that goes in the pot with the eggs and beeps when they're done. Except it's so loud it scared my cat, and I can't hear it from the living room anyway. Now I have a $40 gadget that just lives in a drawer. Has anyone found a good way to remember cooking stuff without buying junk?

Just set a timer on your phone. Those single-use gadgets are almost never worth it.

Oh the "single-use gadgets are never worth it" take. My drawer full of avocado slicers and egg cookers feels personally attacked right now. Sometimes you just need a gadget that does one thing really well, even if it means your kitchen looks like a weird infomercial set.

My mom gave me a garlic press for my birthday three years ago. I thought it was the dumbest thing ever, just another unitasker. Used it once and it changed my whole view. Now I can't imagine mincing garlic without it, saves so much time and keeps my fingers from smelling. Sometimes the right gadget for the one job you do all the time is totally worth the drawer space.
