Found a stray dog with a collar but no tags in the park yesterday, tried calling the vet's number on the rabies tag.

I was walking through Miller Park and this little brown dog, maybe a terrier mix, just started following me. He had a nice blue collar but the ID tag was gone. I was about to take him to the shelter, but then I remembered my cousin telling me to check for a rabies tag. Sure enough, it was there, tucked under the collar. The vet's clinic name and phone number were stamped on it. I called, they had the owner's info on file from the vaccination, and I had the dog back home within an hour. Felt way better than just dropping him at the pound. What do you guys do when you find a lost pet? Is calling the number on the rabies tag the first move, or do you try something else?

Checking the rabies tag is always my first move too. It's the most direct link back to the owner, and most vets keep good records. You handled that perfectly.
