Remember when we used to hand-sand everything?

I was working on a ceiling patch last Tuesday in an old house over near Oak Street. The tape lifted on one corner and I had to cut it out and redo the whole thing, took me an extra 45 minutes. Made me think about how much easier we have it now with those automatic tapers and compound sprayers. Anyone else miss the old days or am I just getting sentimental?

...and honestly I used to roll my eyes at the old timers who talked about hand sanding everything like it was some kind of badge of honor. I mean I grew up with power tools and I thought they were just being dramatic. But then last month I had to fix a really bad texture job where the sprayer had clogged up on me and left these ugly lines everywhere. I ended up having to hand sand the whole ceiling anyway just to get it smooth enough to start over. Made me realize there's something to be said for knowing how to do it the hard way even if you don't do it that way all the time.

Yeah but hand sanding a ceiling is a shoulder killer no matter how you slice it.
