My old curling iron from beauty school finally gave out on me last night

It was a cheap Conair one I bought back in 2009, and the clamp just snapped right off mid-curl on a client. I had to quickly switch to a backup wand to finish the set. It's funny how you get attached to a tool that's seen you through so many clients and styles over the years. I remember using that same iron to practice pin curls for my state board exam. What's a reliable brand you all have switched to for daily use that can take a beating?

Man, that's a real bummer when a trusted tool finally goes. You're right, you get so used to the feel of it after that many years. For something that lasts, I've had really good luck with Hot Tools. My daily one is their 1-inch iron, and it's been solid through back-to-back clients for about three years now. The barrel heats evenly and the clamp still feels tight. It's a bit more money up front than a drugstore brand, but it doesn't feel cheap.

Honestly saw a whole thread about Hot Tools last week, @casey_lane73, and a bunch of stylists were saying the same thing about them holding up. Tbh it makes sense to pay more for something that won't quit on you in a year. I read that the heating element they use is just better quality than the cheap ones. That's probably why your iron still feels tight and even after all that use.

My old curling iron lasted almost five years before it started getting loose and cold spots. That feeling when a tool you trust starts to go is the worst. I saw what @casey843 mentioned about the heating element, and it really does explain why some brands just keep going. It's such a relief to use something that heats the same way every single time, you don't realize how much you count on that until it's gone.
