Warning: I stopped chasing promotions after my boss in Seattle told me 'the extra 15k a year isn't worth your weekends'

I was grinding for a manager title for 3 years, but seeing him stressed and missing his kid's games made me rethink the whole ladder. Has anyone else stepped back from a promotion they thought they wanted?

Honestly, the bigger thing people miss is how a promotion can lock you into a lifestyle you can't easily step down from. That extra money gets spent fast on a bigger mortgage or nicer car, and then you're TRAPPED in that high stress job because you need the cash. It's a golden handcuff situation that nobody talks about until it's too late.

Totally feel this lol. Got a raise last year and immediately upgraded my apartment, now the car payment feels huge. You start living right at the edge of that new paycheck and the idea of a lower stress job seems impossible because you'd have to sell everything. It's a wild trap to fall into.
