My old boss told me to never ask for a raise before my one-year mark, but I just got a 15% bump at 8 months.
He said it would make me look greedy and hurt my chances, but my new project lead saw my work and told me to just ask. I went for it with a list of what I'd done, and they said yes without any pushback. Has anyone else been given advice like this that just didn't pan out?

Honestly, my last foreman had a whole list of rules like that. He swore you should never take a job that paid hourly, only flat rate. Tbh, I've made way more on hourly gigs where the client kept adding work. A lot of that old-school advice just keeps people playing small.

Yeah that "keeps people playing small" line is so true, @nancy820. What other old-school rules did that foreman push that you think actually HURT people?
