Dropped $400 on a logo redesign from a random freelancer on Upwork and it's completely unusable

I figured I'd save some cash instead of going with my usual agency, but this guy sent me 3 concepts that look like clip art from 2005. The files aren't even vector, they're low-res PNGs. Has anyone else had a bad experience trying to cheap out on brand design?

Showerthought: Are we spending too much on fancy patio furniture when secondhand stuff holds up better?

Had a chat with my neighbor Phil last weekend while we were both out watering plants. He's got this rusty old metal table from the 80s that still stands rock solid after 40 years, no joke. Meanwhile I spent $600 on a resin wicker set from the big box store two years ago and it's already cracking and fading. He said something like "they don't build stuff to last anymore, they build it to sell you another one in three years." That hit different because honestly I've been eyeballing a new set for next spring anyway. So what do you all think - is it smarter to hunt down vintage metal or wood pieces that can take a beating, or am I just unlucky with modern stuff? Anyone else had this debate in their own backyard?

Line cooks vs prep cooks doing their own prep - which system actually works better?

I been running a kitchen in Portland for about 6 years now and I swear letting line cooks do their own prep during service gaps keeps them faster on the line. But my sous chef came from a place in Chicago where the prep team handled everything separate and he says his old spot ran smoother. After watching a Friday night where my way had a guy burn through 40lbs of onions in 2 hours versus the prep team taking all morning, I'm not so sure anymore. What's your kitchen doing and which side actually holds up under a 200 cover push?

Spent 4 hours trying to fix a CSS typo that was just a missing semicolon

Last Tuesday I was building my first personal website and the whole layout was a mess. I checked my HTML, my CSS, everything looked fine but the navbar just wouldn't line up. Turns out I forgot one semicolon at the end of a line. My coworker Dave came over and spotted it in like 10 seconds. Has anyone else stared at broken code for hours just to find something that small?

Showerthought: Figuring out why my anime downloads kept failing took me 3 hours

I spent all Saturday trying to download a new series from a fansub group and it kept stopping at 73 percent every time. Tried resetting my router, switching browsers, even reinstalling my torrent client. Turned out my antivirus was flagging the folder as suspicious and blocking the write access. Tried adding a tablespoon of vinegar to my pie dough and it changed everything

I've been making pies for like 8 years now and always struggled with tough crusts. Last week I saw a baker on YouTube toss a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into her flour mix before adding butter. I figured why not try it on my apple pie for Sunday dinner. The dough rolled out way easier and didn't shrink weird in the pan like usual. The crust came out super flaky and tender, not tough at all. Has anyone else experimented with acids in their dough, or is this just some weird hack that only worked once for me?

Cheap end mills from that online surplus store cost me a $600 job

I bought a bulk pack of carbide end mills for $40 from some discount website. They seemed fine at first, but on the third run one shattered and gouged the part so bad I had to scrap the whole batch. Anyone else learned the hard way that saving money on tooling costs more in the long run?

I picked up a $4 setting spray from a beauty supply shop on 8th Ave last month and swore it would be garbage, but it outlasted my $30 Urban Decay through a double wedding shift last Saturday. Has anyone else found a random product that totally surprised them like that?

I was out of dip and had a random apple sauce pack from my kid's lunch and gave it a try. The sweet and salty mix actually works way better than I thought, has anyone else done this or am I just weird?

Debate: Is AI art actually innovative or just an advanced filter? I think people confuse novelty with creativity.

I keep seeing folks call Midjourney outputs groundbreaking, but to me it feels more like a supercharged version of the old Instagram filters we used 10 years ago. Am I wrong to think real innovation means solving problems, not just generating pictures that look cool? What's your take?

Found out my old Spirograph set is worth $200 now

Idk, I kinda get the opposite feeling. Finding out something you actually used and enjoyed is worth money now makes me feel weirdly possessive. Like yeah maybe I could sell it, but then I'd just be another person trying to cash in on nostalgia. Maybe it's just me but a beat up Spirograph with a few gears missing still has memories attached to it, and that's worth more than 200 bucks to me.

Talked to a retired Navy radio guy at the hangar last Thursday and it changed how I troubleshoot

Oh man, the antenna ground is always the last thing you think about lol. Was this a permanent install or a portable setup? I've spent way too many hours chasing gremlins on a boat where the mast ground plate was just corroded to hell. Ended up cleaning it with a wire brush and dielectric grease and boom, crystal clear reception. Makes you wonder how many perfectly good radios got tossed because of something dumb like that. Have you ever had a similar save where the fix was embarrassingly simple?
