PSA: Heard a client say they 'fixed' their shutter with a YouTube video and a toothpick

I was at my shop in Austin yesterday and a guy came in with a Canon 5D Mark III that was totally locked up. He told me he saw a video about a 'sticky shutter' and tried to poke the curtain mechanism with a plastic toothpick. Now the shutter blades are bent and the mirror box is scratched. It's going to cost him over $400 to fix what was probably a simple $100 CLA. Has anyone else seen a big jump in DIY disasters from online tutorials lately?

That YouTube confidence is a real problem these days.

Oh man, that hurts to read. I feel so bad for that guy, but it's a perfect example of why those quick fix videos are so dangerous. They make it look easy but never show the real risk of wrecking your gear. My buddy had a similar mess with an old film camera after watching one. What was the video even called, do you know?

@parker_sullivan isn't wrong, that's a new level of toothpick tech.
