Finally got that old farmhouse flue liner to seal up right

Exactly. It's like that with so many things, not just houses. You patch up the surface problem, but the real issue is hidden and way bigger. Then you have to tear into it and do the harder, longer fix. Always feels good when it's finally done right, but man, the middle part is rough.

Read a thing about how many people mess up their first loaf of sourdough

Actually a dense loaf can be pretty useful. Makes a decent paperweight or a step stool for a small dog.

The client in Tempe who wanted a perfect finish but kept the AC off

That "saving money" line is a classic. See it all the time with DIY landlords. They'll skip on the prep or the right conditions to save fifty bucks, then pay triple to have it fixed later. It's not just drywall, it's how people approach any problem. They fight the process instead of working with it.

Am I the only one who cringes when people ask for details right after a breakup?

Honestly, it's not about the question itself, it's about the timing. Asking for the play-by-play right after it happens is like asking for the details of a car crash while someone's still stuck in the wreck. Even if they mean well, it forces the person to relive the worst part before they've had a second to breathe. A simple "that sucks, I'm here if you want to talk" gives them control over when and if they share. Pushing for info right away just adds pressure on top of the pain.

Rant: My foreman swears by a 3 inch slump for driveways, but the old guy at the supply yard told me that's way too wet.

Yeah, that 4 inch middle ground is the sweet spot for a reason. It gives you enough time to work it without watching all the cream rise to the top. A 3 inch slump can fight you on a hot day, and a 5 inch is basically admitting you forgot to order a vibrator. The old guy at the yard is right about the cracks, a soupy mix shrinks way more as it dries.
