I finally stopped using prefinished plywood on high-end jobs after a client called me out
A guy near Portland pointed out all the micro-chips along the edges of my cabinets last fall. He was right, the factory finish just doesn't hold up to sanding like I thought. Has anyone else found a better way to handle raw plywood edges without going full veneer?

The shellac trick is solid, but I've gotta laugh at myself here. I once spent an entire weekend hand-sanding every raw plywood edge in a laundry room because I forgot to knock off those sharp corners first. Looked like a beaver had chewed on them by the time I was done. Ended up just slapping some iron-on edge banding over the whole mess and calling it a day. My wife still brings it up every time she does laundry.

Tape a piece of scrap wood to your edge and run your sander over it at a 45 to knock off the sharp corners before you finish. A coat of shellac as a sealer before your paint or poly will keep the raw edge from drinking up all your finish and leaving a rough texture. That trick saved me from having to redo an entire kitchen last year.
