Am I the only one who thinks the Hunger Games movies actually improved the books?
I reread the original trilogy last month and then rewatched the movies, and I was surprised how much extra depth the films added to characters like Effie and Haymitch compared to the first-person narration. The books felt so locked into Katniss's limited perspective that I missed a lot of the Capitol's political maneuvering that the movies showed visually. Has anyone else felt that a film version actually made the story richer instead of just cutting stuff out?

My buddy Sarah totally had this exact same realization last year when we did a book/movie marathon. She was always team Gale in the books but after watching the movies she was like wait, I actually get why Peeta matters so much now because you can see his whole propaganda thing playing out in the background shots. The scene where Effie breaks down crying after the Victory Tour in Catching Fire hit way harder in the movie because you actually saw her as a person instead of just a ridiculous Capitol figure. She kept pausing the movies to be like "oh wow I never noticed that the books only showed me what Katniss saw and she missed like half the story." By the end she was honestly mad at herself for not getting the political stuff earlier. It's wild how much the movies added just by letting us see other characters having their own lives.

Wait, wait, wait. Your buddy Sarah was actually mad at herself for missing the political stuff? That hits hard. Because I had the exact same blind spot with Effie. In the books I just wrote her off as this annoying cartoon character with the wigs and the fake laugh. Then in the movies, when she hands Katniss those cookies before the first Games? And later when she's just sitting in that empty train car looking wrecked? I felt like an idiot for not seeing she was a prisoner in that system too. The books trapped us in Katniss's head so bad we missed the whole damn point.

Started feeling the same way about half the adults in my life after I moved out. @viola_butler You realize some people are just stuck in their own system and don't even see it.
