Serious question, do board game geeks care more about winning or the experience?

My buddy Mark told me I was running games wrong because I always focus on rules and scoring, not the vibe. Now I'm wondering if this community leans towards competitive edge or casual fun - what do you think matters more when you sit down at the table?

and I saw this study once that said board game players fall into three camps: competitors, socializers, and explorers. I think most people enjoy a mix but if someone's really into rules and scoring they might just be wired that way, not necessarily wrong. Good players can flex between both vibes depending on the table though, so maybe just ask your group what they want next time.

The real sleeper variable nobody talks about is table energy - a rules-heavy game can pop off with the right crowd and a loose game can flop if the vibe's off. Maybe it's less about competitive vs casual and more about reading the room before you even open the box.
