Just found out the original print run of 'Dune' from 1979 was only 500 copies. Saw that on a blog about old Avalon Hill games.

That's a wild number for such a famous book now. It really shows how hard it is to predict what will become a classic. You see it all the time with old games, records, even toys. Things that were made in small batches and almost thrown out can end up being the most sought after pieces later on. Makes you wonder what common stuff today will be rare and valuable in 40 years. The first run of anything always has that special chance.

The first Harry Potter had a print run under 500 copies, and now look at it. You're totally right, @kai_brown23, that first batch is always the gamble. I bet the authors of those original 500 thought they'd just be pulped. It's funny to imagine people in the 90s just tossing that book aside, not knowing. Makes me look at the junk in my garage differently, like my old beanie babies. Probably still junk, but you never know!
