PSA: A damp paper towel over your cake pans prevents domed tops
I was baking three layers for a birthday cake last Tuesday and got sick of leveling domes. Tried wrapping each pan with a damp paper towel strip pinned with safety pins before going in the oven. Worked like a charm, tops came out almost perfectly flat. Has anyone else stumbled onto this trick or is it old news?

Wait, did I just stumble into some kind of baking sorcery here? That's genius and I'm mad I didn't think of it sooner. I've spent more time leveling cake domes than actually decorating them. Last birthday cake I made looked like a hunchback with frosting, no joke. Gonna try this with my next batch of cupcakes too, see if it keeps those little peaks down. Thanks for saving my future cakes from looking like they got into a fight with a spatula.

Dude right? My buddy @averywright tried this trick last week on a lemon cake and it came out flatter than a pancake. No joke he was so hyped he sent me a pic at 2am with the caption "finally no hunchback." I think the towel trick works way better than the wet strip thing too. My only warning is don't use a terrycloth towel unless you want lint all over your frosting.
