My sourdough starter went crazy and almost took over my kitchen in Seattle
I left my starter, named Fred, on the counter overnight after a big feeding. Woke up to it bubbling over the rim of my 2-liter jar and dripping down the cabinets. I had to quickly scrape it into a huge bowl and bake three emergency loaves at 6 AM. Has anyone else had a starter explode like that?

Fred sounds like a LIVE ONE. I read somewhere that sourdough starters can double in size SO fast if they're really healthy and the temperature is right. Seattle's humidity probably helps them go nuts too. My buddy in Portland said her starter burst the lid off a mason jar once, glass everywhere. Now she always uses a big mixing bowl as a safety net, just like viola said. Those 6 AM emergency loaves must have smelled AMAZING though.

Oh man, Fred went full monster movie! Honestly, that's a sign of a super happy starter. Tbh, next time try putting the jar in a big mixing bowl before you feed it. That way if it escapes again, it's already contained and you don't have a sticky cabinet crisis.

My starter pulled the same trick last week, @viola_butler. I was so proud of its rise I didn't see the mess creeping under the lid until it was too late. Your bowl idea is genius, way better than my method of frantic cleaning with a spatula.
