My neighbor said my new fence looks 'aggressive' because it's 6 feet tall
We were talking by his mailbox in Seattle last Tuesday and he said it makes our yards feel separate. Am I overthinking that he's actually mad about the property line?

Oh please, a six foot fence is just basic privacy. Does he want a chain link fence he can see through while he's grilling? Tell him to plant some ivy if he wants it to look friendlier. My last neighbor complained about my bamboo screen, then asked for cuttings a month later. People just like to talk.

Right? A solid fence is just normal for having your own space. Neighbors always find something to pick at before they see the benefit. Your bamboo story is the perfect example of that.

Can I tell you what happened to my friend Carol? She put up a simple six foot privacy fence in her backyard and her neighbor had a fit. Said it was too tall, too closed off, that it would make the whole street feel like a fortress. Carol just smiled and said sorry but she needed privacy for her kids and her dog. Two months later that same neighbor had a tree come down in a storm and Carol let them borrow her fence tools to secure their yard. By the end of summer the neighbor was asking Carol who built her fence because they wanted one just like it. People really do just need time to get used to things.
