Rant: The number of people who think a motion sensor is a magic eye beam

I was fixing a system in a house in Tempe last week and the owner kept pointing at the PIR in the hallway saying 'the invisible laser isn't working right'. I had to explain for the third time that it's a passive infrared sensor that reads heat changes, not a tripwire. He was genuinely shocked it didn't shoot a tiny beam across the room. How many of you have had to give this same basic lesson lately?

Ngl that's pretty funny. The guy was probably watching too many spy movies where lasers are the standard home security setup. Honestly though I've had to explain this to like four different homeowners this month alone. They all think there's some invisible beam that trips when you walk through it like a bank vault in a heist film. Tbh I'm starting to wonder if we should just install some cheap laser pointers to make them feel better about their purchase. A red dot on the wall would probably make them feel way more secure than actual thermal detection ever could.

My last client thought it was a ghost detector.
