Watch out for the new city permit fee for outdoor seating

I opened my cafe on Polk Street last month and got hit with a $750 surprise fee for my sidewalk tables. The city clerk said it's a new rule that started in January, and they're checking places now. Has anyone else had to deal with this and know a way around it?

I thought dialing in my grinder for a new bag of beans would take 10 minutes, but it took me three full pots and most of a Saturday morning to finally get it right.

The Ethiopian beans from that new roaster in Portland were so much more sensitive than my usual stuff, and I wasted almost half the bag before I realized my water was 5 degrees too hot, which a barista friend finally pointed out after I texted him in frustration.

Finally got a clear shot of the Orion Nebula from my backyard

I've been trying for months to get a good picture of M42, but my shots always looked fuzzy. Last night I tried stacking 30 two-minute exposures with DeepSkyStacker instead of just taking one long one. The difference is crazy, you can actually see the gas clouds now. What other deep sky objects work well with this method?

Saw a guy at the hardware store get his refund in under a minute because he had his receipt

I was behind him in line at the Ace in Scottsdale, and he had the item and the paper receipt ready. The clerk scanned it, handed him cash, done. The next person took 15 minutes arguing about a store credit for something they bought months ago. Keeping that little piece of paper saves everyone's time and stops the whole line. How hard is it to just put it in your wallet?

Serious question, did anyone else think a 6-foot level was overkill for setting posts until they had to redo a 40-foot section in Chandler?

I used to eyeball it with a 2-footer, but after that job where the top rail had a visible dip you could spot from the street, my foreman said, 'You're not building a fence, you're building a straight line,' and now I won't touch a post hole without the big level.
