That capacitor trick my mentor swore by ended up saving me 3 hours on a dead power supply last night

Old Mike from the shop down the street told me to always check the 400V caps first in switched supplies. I figured he was just being lazy but after chasing a blown fuse for 2 hours I finally pulled the big cap and sure enough it was reading 0 ohms. Has anyone else found that the obvious fix is usually the right one?

My dad told me to 'just use less salt' on my brisket, and it took 3 tries to figure out he was right

Last month I kept getting salty bark on my overnight smokes. My dad, who cooks like maybe once a year, told me to cut my rub salt by half. I ignored him for two briskets cause he never smokes anything. Finally tried his way on a 12 pounder this Sunday and it came out perfect, not bland at all. Anyone else have family members who give weirdly good advice about something they don't even do?

Can we talk about using leftover brine as a basting liquid?

I tried basting my pork shoulder with leftover apple juice brine halfway through a 10-hour smoke last weekend and it gave the bark this amazing caramelized crust. Has anyone else experimented with reusing brine for mopping, or is that a food safety risk I missed?

Just ran a side-by-side test of two brand naming approaches

I was helping a buddy name his new coffee blend business last month. He wanted something clever like "Bean Voyage" but I pushed him to try a simple descriptive name first like "Colombian Morning Roast". We put both on mock packaging and showed 50 people in a park near downtown Portland. The plain name got 3 times more positive responses and everyone actually remembered it the next day. Has anyone else found that clever names hurt more than they help?

That Wednesday in Chicago where 3 demos went sideways

I had back to back demos lined up last Wednesday for our B2B analytics platform. First one the client's VPN kept dropping out so we spent 20 mins on basics. Second one my pricing slide had an old number from Q1 and the procurement guy caught it. Third one the decision maker just straight up muted me for 5 mins. By 4pm I had zero follow ups and a headache that still haunts me. Anyone else have a demo day where everything just implodes?

I finally pulled the numbers on my fuel consumption last month

Tracked every gallon through the pump meter on the Miss Dorothy for 30 days straight and found I was burning 18% more fuel running at full throttle versus 85%. One of the old hands over at the Gulfport yard showed me his logbook and it lined up with the same savings. Anyone else bothered to do the math on their burn rate?

Found a coolant trick that saved my inserts from chattering

Running a production job on some 304 stainless last Tuesday. Inserts kept chattering after the first pass. Tried lowering speed, adjusting feed - nothing worked. Then I bumped coolant pressure to 400 PSI on a whim. Chattering stopped immediately. Got 87 parts out of one insert versus 35 before. Anyone else running high pressure coolant for stainless?

Tried a power trowel on my basement floor last week and got a rougher finish than hand floating

I've been hand floating for 12 years and finally rented a 36 inch power trowel for a 400 square foot basement slab in Omaha. Figured it would save me time but the finish came out wavy in spots and not as smooth as my hand work. Has anyone else had better luck with these things on smaller jobs?
