I was at a comic shop in Austin last month and heard a dad ask his kid, maybe 8 years old, 'So which Spider-Man is your favorite?' The kid said he liked the one from the video game, and this older guy next to them just rolled his eyes and muttered 'not a real fan' under his breath. It really hit me how that kind of stuff pushes people away. I mean, we all started somewhere, right? How do you guys handle seeing that kind of attitude at your local shops?

I always thought canned tomatoes were the cheap option, but my grocery receipt showed something else

I was making chili last week and bought a 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes for $2.79 at my local Kroger. On a whim, I checked the price of the same brand's 6-ounce can of tomato paste, which was only 89 cents. I realized that ounce for ounce, the paste is way cheaper, and you can thin it out with water or broth to make a sauce base. Has anyone else found a specific ingredient where the 'cheap' version isn't actually the best deal?

I was cleaning up after a job and the homeowner mentioned they only light a fire once a year due to a weird, damp odor the rest of the time. I checked and their chimney cap was totally clogged with leaves, which was trapping moisture. What's the most unusual cause of a chimney smell you've found?

I always thought cleaning finds with a stiff brush was the right first step, but a senior archaeologist on site saw me doing it and said, 'You're scrubbing away the micro-residue we need for analysis.' Now I use a soft brush and distilled water for the initial clean. Has anyone else had a basic field method they had to unlearn?

Heard a pilot at the FBO in Daytona talking about a weird EFIS flicker during climbout

He said it only happened above 8,000 feet on a hot day and cleared up after leveling off. I was just grabbing coffee, but it got me thinking about temperature and pressure effects on older display units. Has anyone else run into an intermittent G1000 issue that seemed altitude-related?

I keep seeing crews treat drones like they're just for pretty pictures

On a site in Austin last year, the foreman had a drone but only used it for weekly progress shots for the client. I asked about checking the roof truss layout from above before sheathing went on, and he looked at me like I had two heads. The drone had a thermal camera too, which sat in the box the whole job. We could have spotted a wet insulation batch before it got sealed in a wall. It's a $2,000 tool being used like a $200 camera. I know because I started mapping my own dirt work with one, and catching a 3 inch grade error early saved a full day of rework. Why buy the tech if you're not going to use half what it can do? Has anyone else pushed their team to use drones for more than just photos?

Update: My bank froze my account in Chiang Mai over a $12 coffee purchase

Honestly, I started using a cheap local SIM card for mobile data and making one small local purchase before any big transaction. Has anyone else found a better trick to stop the fraud alerts?

Got called back to a house in Gilbert because the homeowner's dog kept setting off the motion sensor

Honestly, it was a standard install, a PIR-8 in the living room. The homeowner swore the dog was a small breed and wouldn't trigger it. Tbh, I got the call two days later that the alarm kept going off at night. Went back and the dog, a little terrier, was jumping on the couch right into the sensor's path. I had to re-mount the unit about a foot higher on the wall and adjust the angle down. Now I always ask for the dog's name and where it sleeps. Anyone else have a go-to question to avoid pet false alarms?
