Update: My bank froze my account in Chiang Mai over a $12 coffee purchase

Honestly, I started using a cheap local SIM card for mobile data and making one small local purchase before any big transaction. Has anyone else found a better trick to stop the fraud alerts?

I always call my bank before I leave the country and tell them the exact dates I'll be gone. It puts a note on your file so the system doesn't panic.

Ever had that moment where you're trying to buy a bottle of water after a long flight and your card just gets declined? I had that happen in Rome once, and it was the worst. Standing there tired and confused while the cashier just stared at me. Now I'm super careful about calling ahead, but sometimes I still worry the note won't stick in their system.

Yeah, I do that too. I even give them a list of the countries I'm flying through on layovers now.
