I thought bulk buying beans was a myth until my pantry paid off

Last month I spent $12 on a 10-pound bag of pinto beans at the local co-op, and I've already saved $30 compared to buying cans each week. My family of four has turned them into soups, burritos, and even bean burgers - has anyone else found a weirdly good use for bulk beans?

That Tuesday where everything went right at the grocery store

Last week I had one of those rare perfect shopping trips. I got to the checkout at exactly 9am when they opened the deli and grabbed the last Rotisserie chicken. My total came to $47.32 and I had a $5 off coupon that actually scanned. Every single item I needed was in stock including the weird organic salsa my husband likes. Even the self checkout machine didn't glitch out for once. Has anyone else had a random day where the universe just cooperated with your errands?

Had to pick between 'The Room' and 'Birdemic' for movie night with friends

Last Friday I had to choose which bad movie to show a group of 5 friends who had never seen either one. I went with 'The Room' because I figured the nonsense plot and Tommy Wiseau's acting would be easier to laugh at. Turns out it was the right call, because everyone was quoting lines like 'You're tearing me apart, Lisa!' for the rest of the night. One friend even brought a plastic spoon to throw at the screen during the awkward sex scenes. But I'm curious, has anyone else had a group that just didn't get the humor of these kinds of movies? What's your go to bad movie for introducing new people to the genre?

Finally gave in and tried a track saw after years of improvising...

I always thought track saws were overkill, you know? I figured a circular saw with a straightedge clamped down was good enough. Been doing it that way for like 15 years on job sites around Portland. But last month I had to cut down a bunch of melamine shelving for a closet build, and every single cut with my old method had chipping along the edge. My buddy who does kitchens kept telling me to just borrow his Festool for a day, so I finally did. Man, the difference was night and day... no chipping at all, cuts were dead straight right off the bat, and I didn't have to mess with clamping every three feet. I'm still not sure I need to drop $500 on my own setup, but I get the hype now. Has anyone else found a cheaper track saw that works decent, or should I just bite the bullet on a nicer one?

I was reading this article on Tuesday about data center power consumption, and it said training one large AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their whole lifetime. That number just hit different when I thought about how many models are being trained every day now... Found it on a site called Our World in Data while I was looking up server farm stuff. Has anyone else come across numbers like this that made you rethink how we use AI?

I finally stopped using a knee kicker for residential work

For the first 5 years I did carpet I swore by my knee kicker for stretching rooms, even big master bedrooms. Then I rented a power stretcher in Denver last spring for a 20x15 room and saw how much faster it was with way less callbacks. Anyone else make the switch later than they should have?

That time a random stranger at Home Depot saved me $200 on a fridge repair

I was about to buy a new fridge because mine stopped cooling. A guy in the appliance aisle overheard me talking to the sales guy and pulled me aside. He said 'try cleaning the condenser coils first, 9 times out of 10 that's it.' I went home, pulled the fridge out, and found a thick layer of dust and dog hair on the coils. Vacuumed them off, plugged it back in, and it's been running fine for 6 months now. Has anyone else gotten great advice from a random person in a store that turned out to be spot on?

Question about people who don't torque lug nuts by hand

I watched a guy at my shop in Tucson last week use an impact gun to slam all five lug nuts on a Honda Civic without ever touching a torque wrench, and then he wondered why the rotor warped after 50 miles, has anyone else run into this kind of shortcut in a pro shop?

Almost burned my house down fixing a toilet flange in Portland

Funny you mention that, because I used to roll my eyes when people would say "always call before you dig" or check for pipes. I figured if you're just cutting drywall in a 1920s house, how bad could it be? Then my neighbor tried to hang a shelf and hit an old gas line that wasn't even mapped anywhere. His whole kitchen had to be aired out for a day. Now I'm a total convert - I spend the $50 on a cheap utility locator and take it slow around any plumbing or wiring. That "nick" you had could've been way worse, and $150 is cheap compared to a hospital visit.
