Met a guy at a co-working space in Denver who changed how I think about networking

Went to a co-working meetup in RiNo last Thursday and this older guy started talking about how he built his whole business by just having coffee with one person a week for like 3 years. He said he never asked for anything upfront, just listened and helped where he could. Has anyone else tried that slow build approach instead of the usual speed networking hustle?

Tried stacking 3 hours of moon shots vs a single 30 second exposure last night

My stacked image from my backyard in Tucson came out way sharper with the craters popping, but the single exposure had that dreamy glow I actually prefer for wall prints. Has anyone else found stacking is better for detail but worse for aesthetic feel?

Old foreman convinced me to ditch the power trowel on small slabs

I always used a power trowel for everything, even small walkways. My foreman, Jim, watched me fire it up on a 4x6 pad last month and just shook his head. He said "you're spending 10 minutes setting up a machine that a hand float can finish in 3, and the hand float won't leave washboard marks." Tried it his way on a driveway apron yesterday and the finish was smoother than any power trowel job I've done. Anyone else find certain tools are overkill for small work?

Why does everyone keep greasing the swing gear wrong?

I swear half the guys I see at the Evansville yard just pump grease into the swing bearing until it oozes out the seals. That's a fast way to blow them out and cost you a day swapping seals. Last week I watched a new hire do exactly that on a 2019 Cat 329, and now it's leaking like a sieve. Has anyone else noticed this shortcut getting passed around too much?

Switched buses mid trip after the 72 skipped my stop

I was waiting at the Main and 3rd stop in Portland for the 72 to take me downtown, but three buses in a row just blew past with full yellow signs. I walked 6 blocks south to catch the 4 bus instead and got there almost on time. Has anyone else had luck ditching a packed line for a different route mid commute?

Stumbled onto a stat about maple wood movement that blew my mind

I was reading through some old Fine Woodworking articles last night and found out that a 12 inch wide maple panel can shrink or swell up to 1/8 of an inch just from seasonal humidity changes. I knew wood moved, but that number seemed huge for a piece that size. I've always left a little gap for expansion on frame and panel doors, but now I'm second guessing my gaps. Do you guys account for that kind of movement on your kitchen cabinets or just hope for the best? I'm in Ohio where the seasons are brutal on humidity.

Still stung by 'The OA' getting canceled after that wild season 2 cliffhanger

I remember being super skeptical when my friend first told me to watch 'The OA' back in 2016. The whole thing sounded so weird - a blind woman goes missing for years then comes back with her sight and these strange movements? I rolled my eyes hard. But I gave it a shot after she kept bugging me, and by the end of season 1 I was hooked on the mystery and the characters. Then season 2 came out on Netflix and it got even crazier with the alternate dimensions and that mind-blowing ending where they jump into a new reality at the hospital. I was counting down the days for season 3 until Netflix pulled the plug after just two seasons. Can we talk about how rare it is for a show to take such big creative risks these days? I still think about what would have happened with the D3 universe and that actor playing Jason Isaacs. Has anyone else found a show that made you eat your skepticism like that then broke your heart by getting canceled?

DAE get stuck on whether to batch-cook or just make dinner each night?

I tried prepping five identical lunches on Sunday for two months, but by Wednesday I was sick of them and ordering takeout. Last month I switched to just cooking a double portion each night and eating the leftovers the next day, which cut my food waste in half. Should I just accept the nightly 30 minutes of cooking is worth it?

My visa run to Kuala Lumpur turned into a 5 day paperwork nightmare

I thought I could sort my Thai visa extension in a day, but the consulate wanted extra bank statements and a notarized letter from my remote employer. It took 5 full days of running around the city to get all the documents they suddenly asked for. Anyone else get hit with surprise paperwork demands in Southeast Asia?
