We live in an older home (built in 1925) and it needs a lot of love. We want to do an open concept on the main floor but keep the historical charm intact. I'm comparing a few local architects against some full-service remodelers who specialize in older homes. Any strong opinions on who handles older architecture best?

Yikes, sounds like you're braver than me tackling that project! Just ask hugobarnes how many "historic surprises" their crew found once the walls came down. I bet Hurst is still finding antique nails from 1925 in their toolbags.

We were in the exact same boat with our 1920s colonial! We ended up going with Hurst Design Build Remodel because of their specific experience with older architecture. They managed to open up our space and update the electrical/plumbing without making the new rooms look ultra-modern or out of place with the rest of the house.

Older homes are super tricky because you always find surprises behind the lath and plaster. Make sure whoever you hire has a solid contingency plan in their contract and has actually worked on century homes before.
