Broke my auger bit on a hidden tree root in Topeka
I was digging post holes for a backyard fence last Tuesday and hit a massive root about 18 inches down. My brand new 12-inch auger bit snapped clean off at the shaft. Anyone got a good trick for finding underground roots before you start drilling?

Broke my auger bit" - yeah, done that. Probe with a steel rod first.

Why does it always have to be that last inch of frozen ground that gets you... I snapped mine clean in half trying to punch through a patch of hardpan last spring, felt real dumb standing there holding two pieces. Thought I'd save time by skipping the pilot hole, you know how that goes. Now I just keep a spare bit in the truck, saves me a trip to the hardware store every time I get impatient.
