Honestly, it finally clicked for me that a quick brush-down of the hoof wall before nailing makes the shoe sit way tighter.

Oh man, that's so true. (I always forget how much the little things matter.) One time, we rushed through cleaning a hoof and missed some grit in the cleft, which seemed minor. The horse ended up with a slight lameness because the shoe sat weird, and we had to redo the whole job. It took hours to figure out that tiny bit of debris was the cause. Now I'm super careful about every prep step, even the ones that feel like overkill. You just never know what small thing will make or break a good shoeing.

I mean come on though, is a tiny bit of grit really gonna make a horse lame? Sometimes these things just happen and we blame whatever small mistake we can find. Horses are pretty tough.
