My neighbor's kid showed me I was watering my lawn at the worst possible time

I've been getting up at 6 AM to water my front yard for years because I thought that was the right thing to do. Then last week my neighbor Tim, who works at a nursery, told me I was wasting water because the sun comes up so early here in July. He said I should be doing it late at night, like 10 PM, so the water actually soaks in instead of evaporating. I tried it for three nights and my grass actually looks greener now, not all crispy by noon. It makes sense when you think about it, but nobody ever told me that before. Has anyone else been watering at the wrong time of day for ages without realizing it?

6 AM watering" - yeah that's rookie hours in July, man.

Bought a soaker hose system this year just for that reason. Set it on a timer at 3 AM so the water gets down deep before the sun even thinks about coming up. By the time I'm stumbling out for coffee around 7, everything's already soaked and the plants look happy. Only downside is my dog thinks the hose timer is a monster and barks at it every night. But honestly, those 6 AM sprinkler sessions just bounce off the leaves and evaporate before the roots see a drop.
