I spent $500 on a networking event that was just a sales pitch

It was supposed to be for connecting with founders, but the whole thing was just vendors trying to sell me software. Has anyone found a good group that's actually about building real connections?

The sales pitch itself is five hundred dollars. That's more than my car payment last month. I can't imagine paying that just to hear someone talk.
