Rant: That time I nearly dropped a car in a school hallway
Last Tuesday we were doing a mod job at Lincoln Middle School in Detroit. Running new cables through a shitty old conduit and my apprentice hands me the wrong gauge wire. Three times. I got annoyed and yanked the bundle too hard. Snapped a support bracket right off the wall. Car lurched maybe an inch but my heart stopped. That was a 4000 pound cab with kids in the building. Now I double check every single bracket before I pull anything. Even if it's just a routine swap. Anyone else ever have a close call that made you slow way down?

Man, that's the kind of wake-up call that sticks with you. In my experience, close calls like that often point to a bigger issue, like not taking enough time to really look at the whole setup before you start pulling cable. Your mileage may vary, but I've found that a quick "walk the path" before doing anything saves way more hassle than a rushed job ever does.

Used to be the guy who just dove right in and figured problems out as they came. Thought walking the path was a waste of time when I could just start pulling cable and see what happens. Then I had a job where I ran a bundle straight through a wall without checking what was on the other side. Turned out it was a fresh patch of drywall the painters had just finished. That was a fun conversation with the foreman. Ever since then, I do the slow walk first and it's saved me more times than I can count.
