Overheard my neighbor's Ring doorbell convo and it made me rethink my own setup
Was walking my dog last Tuesday and passed by my neighbor's house. Their Ring caught me and started talking to them through their phone I guess. I heard the guy say "yeah just put it on the porch I can see everything from here." Made me realize how much I rely on these things without really thinking. I put a camera on my own front door 2 years ago to track packages but now I wonder who else is listening in. Anyone else get weirded out by your own gear after hearing something like that?

Geez, that's creepy. I mean, I got one of those cameras a few years back just to see who's stealing my paper delivery, but I never really thought about the other side of it. Did your neighbor say anything else that made you feel like you were the one being watched instead of watching for packages? I wonder if there's a way to tell when someone else is listening in through your own camera, or if you even get notified. I'd be paranoid every time I walked past a house with one now.

A buddy of mine had a similar worry after his neighbor mentioned they could hear his dog barking through the video doorbell. He started testing it by talking to himself in his kitchen, just random stuff like “out of milk again,” and then asking his neighbor later if they caught that. They did, which freaked him out because he figured the camera only recorded motion. Turns out some models let you listen in anytime if you have the app open, no notification needed. He ended up putting a piece of tape over the speaker on his own camera, just in case.
