My laptop charger died in a Chiang Mai cafe during a client call

I was halfway through a Zoom meeting with a new client when my screen went black and I realized the charger had just stopped working completely. I had to scramble to find a shop with the right adapter, which took over an hour and made me miss the deadline for the proposal. Has anyone else had a piece of gear fail at the worst possible time while working abroad?

You said you had to scramble to find a shop. But is that really the worst thing? You got to see a bit of the city, right? People plan whole trips to Chiang Mai and you got a free tour looking for an adapter. Missing a deadline is rough, but gear fails for everyone everywhere. Maybe the real problem was not having a backup plan, not the charger dying.

Chiang Mai is a great city but not when you're stressed. A backup plan is just having a universal adapter in your bag. Calling a frantic search a free tour feels pretty out of touch.

What exactly would a good backup plan look like for a dead charger in a foreign city?
